Hine hatte zunächst  Soziologie studiert und als Lehrer an der Ethical Culture School eine Stelle angenommen, als ein  Kollege ihm empfahl die Photographie sozusagen als eine „pädagogische Maßnahme“ in den Unterricht zu integrieren. Diese Idee brachte Hine zur Photographie.

Hines Arbeiten aus den Jahren 1904 – 1909 entstehen auf Ellis Island, wo er die Ankunft der Immigranten aufnimmt.

Es folgen große Photo-Dokumentationen, die unser Bildgedächtnis bis heute prägen.
